I began my weight training on July 22, 2005. I hated the
person I saw in the mirror and decided to change what I could without dieting
and supplements. As a teacher, at the beginning of the year we have to say
something about ourselves. That particular year the question was geared to a
personal challenge you would make. I can still hear the laughter as I announced
to my fellow co-workers at the beginning of the school year that I was going to
start a 5 year fitness and nutrition plan. One person said, “well, you gotta a
ways to go, you better start now!” The sarcasm, though maybe not fully
intended, was there.
At 156 pounds, I had yo-yoed my way down from 171 pounds.
Diets didn’t work for me, and due to allergies, supplements were not possible
for me. However, hard work, determination, and the “want to be fit” attitude
were at my fingertips. I knew that eating clean and maintaining a steady
fitness regimen would benefit me. I had not gained the weight overnight, so I
didn’t expect to lose it overnight. What I did expect was TRANSFORMATION…and
what a transformation I have accomplished!
To date, I, in my beginning of the 4th year of
my 5 year plan, I have lost 30 pounds and 45 inches….INCHES! all over my body!
13 of those inches were in my gut! I have maintained a steady loss of weight
and kept it off. Although, I fluctuate from 126- 130, I have gone from a size
13 to a size 4.
I just celebrated my 49th birthday: fit, fine,
and forty-nine! How incredible is that! I am in better physical shape with more
muscle tone than I had when I was in my 20’s. The amazing thing is through this
process, I did this FOR ME. I have literally lost a whole person!
I kept journals of what exercises I did, kept a
spreadsheet of monthly measurements, and took lots and lots of pictures. I
started with 20 minutes a day until I could do more. Once I started seeing
results, the rest fell in place.
I will be 50 years old next year and beginning the 5th year of that 5 year plan. The irony is people aren’t laughing anymore. J The skepticism that fueled my
determination in the beginning has taught me that even negative motivation can
be channeled into some very positive results. What’s great is if Teri LaFaye
can do this….anyone can!
Don't rely only on the visual of the scale! The measuring tape is far more effective. When I gain or flutuate from 126 to 131, I don't worry so much. Muscle weighs more than fat and too, fluid retention can attribute to pounds. People get too caught up in what they think the perfect weight is. Instead of obsessing over 4 or 5 pounds, love yourself and go with how you FEEL in those new clothes you're wearing.
Works for ME!
hugs 2 u!
Teri
